Departing Decade

The New Year

The swirl of the chilled air
Pushes past my hair into my eyes
I don’t care perhaps is unwise
As I ponder the year
I wander the past
Thought it would last
The parade of the last decade
The price I paid
Those thoughts that stayed with me
I smile there for a while
Standing in line
Watching the wind as it curled a loose plastic bag

Its dawn

I'm on your lawn

I eat squirmy wormies

A Winter Afternoon

Sweeping chill, wind roars I need something warm. Tea? My friend beckons me, don't forget thee when you pour some tea.

Soar - Illustration Friday

Winter Bird

The week between Christmas and New Years was always a magical week. As a kid, it meant no school and a chance to play with the new toys and eat the Christmas candy.
As an adult it carried the same type of magic, it seems most people take off from work.
Traffic is lighter, trains less filled. The days are short, and dark. I tend to reflect more on my past and my future. One thing I’ve been doing for the past few years is I write a note to myself only to be opened next year when I put up the Christmas decorations. It really gives me insight into what was happening in my life last year at that time, it also allows me to communicate with the future Heidi. I ask questions of myself. This week, between the holidays, I am thinking of what I want to write for next years me, and what I want to communicate to her.
Winter bird is a new piece I just finished, I’ve been evolving my illustration style to incorporate my love of printmaking, but also drawings that are taken directly from my sketchbook. There is a sort of quietness in this piece, yet a conquering of sorts. It is life with all the good and the bad. I wrote the poem last summer.

Word Shadows

The leaves on the trees, bouncing from the breeze
made a shadow on the ground
it seemed to whisper a light sound
with words, it looked like Greek, then it became clear
it read
“The end is near “
Said without fear
I stopped for a moment to comprehend
Everyday is a gift, this moment suspended under the trees
Tomorrow could be gone
Shadow written on the path, walking slowly,
so clear, so near
There is nothing to fear.

Salvador - illustration

The Man Called Salvador

Salvador was a man with a plan
so he bought some land
he didn't think to scan
it was full of sand

so he picked himself up
and said "dam"

so much for the plan
he thought up a scam
to sucker some other man

then along came Tucker with a giant
label that said sucker

did Tucker buy the land of sand?

it wasn't in the stars because Tucker
was mostly into cars
Spared from this plan
Salvador decided to lay out and get a tan
it would be his next plan

Saw Lady

Saw Lady

I saw a lady with a saw
What does this lady saw?

The crowds of people point and awe
When they see the lady with the saw

She sings the song, so sad and mellow
Heartbreaks all the young fellows

Remembrance of sadden times
When forests existed and not the saw

So now the saw has only its song
And a kindhearted lady who plays it alone

Before the world was made

Before the world was made

If I make the lashes dark And the eyes more bright And the lips more scarlet, Or ask if all be right From mirror after mirror, No vanity's displayed: I'm looking for the face I had Before the world was made. What if I look upon a man As though on my beloved, And my blood be cold the while And my heart unmoved? Why should he think me cruel Or that he is betrayed? I'd have him love the thing that was Before the world was made.

Break Dancing

Break Dancing

2 break a beat,
Dancers on the street,
Solo dancers on the ground,
Use their heads to spin around,
The speaker vibrates with the sound,
A box of money passed around,
Organized and planned,
The dancers stand and clap their hands,
To a beat one jumps to his feet,
Forward center what a pleasure,
Side to side he knows the space,
A smile upon his face,
Suddenly as if in a race,
A swirl of motion grabs his pace,
Contortion of posture makes us wonder,
A leg above the shoulder the dancer rolls over,
An astonished commuter smiles,
And stays a while,
Then turns to go re-entering the commuter flow.

Morning Commute

Morning Commute

Move quickly up and down the stairs
Keep the pace
Better not waste a second
For this is the morning race
See the seriousness in that face
Ready set go, watch as the crowd flows
Universally agreed, there is a need for speed
A slight plea
Coffee or tea
as the rushing women, rushing men,
Do they welcome the notes from the solo violin?
