Fall is here

Happy October! The farmer's market brings all sorts of interesting squashes and veggies. I love to paint them on 5 x 7 wood panels using acrylic paint.
Here's the latest.
I am not sure how to cook this one? Any suggestions?

My little blue bird painting originally was a class gouache demo, traded with my painter friend Charles Basman for his white house painting. Both are small. The white house oil is only 6 x 6.  I got it framed in a floater frame and it looks gorgeous - Thanks Charles!

The Art Deco Vegetable

The beautiful Artichoke is basically an unopened flower bud.
It its from the Mediterranean region. If left to flower the flower would be a lovely purple stringy one.
To cook and eat them, first you must clip off the ends of the leaves and steam the bud. When it's soft, pull off the leaves and dip in a melted butter sauce and then scrape the inside of the leaf with your teeth. Eat all the petals then you are treated to the yummiest part, the heart.

Butternut

Another tastee squash painting and dinner.

Purchased this butternut squash based on its appearance for painting it. It’s sort of always been a mystery to me how to cook a squash.

I finally cut it in half… the beautiful orange color. Painted it!  But then time to cook…

The true adventure begins.

Start off cubing the squash, small bite size cutes.

In a large pot coated with some olive oil, cook the squash with ½ teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon of curry- cook a few minutes until it sticks to the bottom then add ½ cup of water.

Cover and cook.

Meanwhile… in a bowl combine green onions, 2 clove of garlic, dash of soy sauce and

5 eggs.

After the squash is cooked pour the egg mixture over and lower heat.

Stir till cooked.

Can you believe it? It’s already December! I am glad. This was a crazy Fall for me, so busy. 

One thing about this season is the amount of Darkness! It gets dark by 4:30 pm. And this year it feels so black to me. I know my body wants me to hibernate. My mind however has been introspective. And the art I’ve been making has all been small still-lifes. 

When I visit my Mom, who is now 80, I search her vast collection of plants. My Mom, bless her, loves plants, she even puts the leaves that knock off and roots them in a small cup of water. Nothing goes in the garbage. She celebrates all life. She is very special. So when I visit I look around and find a plant to draw and paint. 

I just want something small and simple to paint. I guess my attention is as limited as the daylight.

So these little drawing/paintings fill up my sketchbook. I use gouache and pen/marker on h2o paper.

As Thanksgiving passed I think I felt disappointment at how commercial and materialistic the holiday has become. I just can’t agree that stores open on Thanksgiving is a good thing.

What has happened to the quiet peaceful holiday where we reflect on our gratitude with our loved ones?

It seems that Christmas was always a commercial holiday, but now it encroached into Thanksgiving.

Anyhoo you won’t find me shopping on that day.

I am grateful that I understand all this.

Lemons and Limes

The humidity has really gotten to me recently, where once I wasn't as bothered. This growing older is rough.

Summer brings fruits into my studio. I was feeling like doing tiny paintings. I am still trying to learn to paint using a few brush strokes as possible.

Also fast ink wash sketches from nudes, one of my favorite things to do. The excessive heat has me staying inside in the comfort of my AC studio.

Honestly I am not sure. Yet again trying to get attention, perhaps?

Fact, I can't stop. Just too much  to explore with Pink Heads, plus its fun to keep playing with this theme.
